The very early WD's had the serial number stamped next to the left brake access cover opposite the seat.
If you post the 'Engine' serial number I can give you a rough idea of the age of the tractor, assuming the engine is original.

Not sure about the WD, but on the WC, front side of the right end of the rear axle, between the differetial and the C-channel, is a casting date for the axle.

That number confuses me; could you look at it again and clarify whether the last digit is a 6 or a G??
The WDs used either GA or PA as a suffix to designate gasoline engines.
The WD-45s used a G to designate Gasoline; however the WD-45 engine serial numbers begin with '45' rather than 'WD'.
Because yours starts with only 'W', I'm wondering whether its a WC engine.

I have 4 WD tractors- checked the one in the tool room of the shop...it is sn 33966, a 1949. There are casting dates on the intermediate castings of the rear end. Intermediate casting is between the differential and the final drive casting- one that has the wheel on it. Since they are identical castings...the casting date is on the front side of the right intermediate casting, and on the rear side of the left one. This WD shows 9-29-49 on the left side, and 8-30-49 on the right side. Casting dates give you an idea, but do not determine the production date- the date the tractor left the assembly line. Considering the immense, immediate popularity of the WD, it does give a good indication of the year of production, between 1948 and Spring of 1953, when the WD45 came out, at sn 146007.

I checked the casting numbers on the final drives and they show 3-17-49 on the left side and 3-21-49 on the right side

I just confirmed my suspicions by getting a second opinion on the engine numbers for WCs.
The WC tractor engines have the W prefix only.
So........Your engine appears to be a WC gas engine.
Not to worry; very little difference, if any, between a WD block and one from a WC.

A few years ago a guy over on the 'Unofficial Allis' site devised a list showing the correlation between the engine and tractor serial numbers on WDs and WD-45s and published it on the site. I've never seen a like list for the WCs, tho.

Weren't some tractor serial numbers duplicated on a frame rail? Right side by belt pulley seems to be ringing a bell in my head.

W153888G would most likely be a 1945 WC or WF engine. I think I was the source of the correlation list you mentioned - and I do have a list for WC's - but not as much data - but range I've seen for 1945 WC engines goes from W144xxx to W154xxx and I own 2 WCs s/n WC144378 with motor W153952K and WC144380 with motor W153950K.
But as to placement of S/N on early WD, look at top of axle at left brake cover - I've seen there and in one case stamped under edge of brake cover so you had to remove cover to see it.
best, Ed

You may have a WD not a WD45. With out running your numbers I can not be sure. So a couple questions for you. Is the shifter straight or does it have a curve in it?? On the right side of the engine is there a big bolt on plate there or is it solid and has no plate?? Other then a few little things a WD and WD45 look the same to most people and those 2 things tell you more then the numbers do some times

All WD and WD45 tractor serial numbers start with a WD. The engine serial number for a WD starts with WD and the Engine serial number for a WD45 starts with a 45.
So you are telling us that the serial number is WD146368? If so you have a very late WD. It will have the constant mesh transmission, but will still have the 201 cu. in. engine.

Late run WDs also have a curved shifter. Both of ours do.

Curved shift lever, along with the constant mesh transmission, started in the 1952 WD at SN 127008. Battery ignition became standard on the WD in '53, SN 136318. WD45 started in '53 at 146607.
