Esp Guitars Serial Number

ESP Guitars topic. ESP Company, Limited ( 株式会社イーエスピー Kabushiki Gaisha Ī Esu Pī) is a Japanese guitar manufacturer, primarily focused on the production of electric guitars and basses.

ESP guitars rose to prominence in the 1980s on the strengths of flamboyant paint schemes and lead style sonic hardware. The Japanese guitar company made a name for itself on signature guitar models built for some of the most popular musicians of the time period. Identifying model years based on serial numbers for these ESP guitars can be difficult as the company kept few production records.

Company Beginnings

Electric Sound Products was opened in 1975 by Hisatake Shibuya in Japan. ESP was originally created to build custom replacement parts for existing guitars, and did not begin producing its own models until 1976. The guitar company hit the shores of the United States in 1983, setting up shop in New York. ESP introduced its first line of guitars there for the U.S., the 400 series, which had strikingly similar body styles to the Fender Stratocaster and Telecaster models.

Signature ESP Guitars

Beginning in 1984, ESP built custom guitars for several high-profile musicians, including Vernon Reid, Ronnie Wood and Vinnie Vincent. This trend continued in 1986 when George Lynch, while on tour in Japan, had a signature ESP guitar built for him. The result would become the ESP Kamikaze. The company used Lynch's popularity to release the Kamikaze as its first signature model available in the United States. Hardware from the Kamikaze models would make appearances in the M-1, MI Custom and Horizon Custom models released that same year.

Vintage ESP Guitar Identification

ESP maintained limited records for its earlier models such as the 400 Series and its Signature guitar production line. In order to effectively date an ESP model built from 1976 to 1988, ESP's technical support staff will need the serial number of the guitar but, more important, pictures of the front and back of the headstock, neck and body. Contact information for ESP's technical support is available on the company's United States website under the support heading. Remember, serial number alone is not an effective way to date these earlier models. ESP simply didn't keep good enough records for that.

Current ESP Guitar Identification

Guitars currently in production and maintained in ESP's catalog are much easier to identify, though serial number alone is still not adequate. ESP's technical support staff will still require pictures of the guitar, along with the serial number to accurately identify the guitar for the customer. The reason for the guitar's serial number being insufficient is the multiple guitar companies for which ESP has built parts over the years. Guitar necks, fret boards and head stocks were built for companies such as Kramer, Dimarzio, Robin Guitars and Schecter, with some parts being used on ESP models as well. As a result, the serial number alone is an indicator of which factory produced the guitar, and not the year or model.

Warnings

Only ESP's technical support staff can accurately make the determination of a guitar's year of production. Avoid guitar 'dater websites' that allow users to input a serial number of a model and get back the year and model name of the guitar in question. These sites are primarily used to perpetuate a counterfeiting epidemic that has been ongoing for years in the music instrument industry. The only company or site or personnel that can accurately date any instrument is the manufacturing company itself.

Written in collaboration with Rick of SteelEdgeGuitars.
1993 - 2 Neck Through Body with reverse moon & stars inlays made for Kirk Hammett
The 1st Ouija ever made for Kirk is his main Ouija that he still keeps. Main characteristics are:
- reverse islamic flag inalys with smaller and less closed moons;
- lower frets compared to his second Ouija and the regular production Ouijas;
- equipped with an EMG 89 at the neck and 81 at the bridge;
- the volume knob is placed little down and left to the “1” in the graphic, instead of on top of it;
- nothing on back of the headstock (no serial number or esp circle logo) and a full 'Kirk Hammett' signature in white on the top of the headstock ('KH-3 style');
-special paint that glow in the dark (not glow anymore because the tritnite glow paint used had a 'glow life' of 7-10 yrs), this paint is more “yellowish” than regular Ouijas;
- 2 spelling errors on the body text: 'WILLIAM FUED TALKING BAARD SET” instead of “WILLIAM FULD TALKIN BOARD SET”;
- the graphic is a little different than post-regular productions Ouijas (very little details like position of the sun…etc...);
I´m gonna keep some of that details in secret as I don´t really wanna people to make counterfeits.

The 2nd Ouija ever madewas given to Kirk not long ago after first one. It has almost the same characteristics as the first, except for these: higher frets (probably extra jumbo frets), two EMG 81, “regular” volume knob placement, 'ESP Custom Guitars' circle logo on back of the headstock. This one was also used by Kirk onstage, as well as for recordings, photoshots, etc... He gave it to a member crew, long time friend with him called Dan, it was dedicated to him by Kirk with some notes in the back mentioning this was one of his main tour guitars as well as used for recording in several albums. It has afull 'Kirk Hammett' signature in white on the top of the headstock. (all the next ones have the KH signature).

1993- 3Neck Through Body custom orders withreversemoon & stars inlays
The 3rd Ouija ever madewas acustom orderfor some “big boy” at ESP, thenlater was given to Armand Crump (Slayer guitar tach r.i.p.2012), then sold to a couple more owners and now is property of Rick of SteelEdgeGuitars.Ithas almost the same characteristics as the first ouija made, except for these:no spelling errors, no 'KH-3 Style' logo on front of the headstock, little different black paint in the neck to body transition.
Two more neck thru Ouijas are said to be made.After many research have not yet been found, so the4thand the5thare considered lost or missing or, maybe, never producted at all.

1993 - 1 Bolt On Neck
I think this one was a sort of test guitar, with similar specs of first ntb ouija but with bolt on neck, big inlays and standard pot position. The serial on the bolt plate is 61946 and send back to 1993.

A custom order from ESP factory for an ESP Ouija in 1995 cost about $1900 in reality (thanks Brian D'Souza):
'I did have an original black ouija back in the 90's it was a custom shop order i placed in 1995 and received in 1996. It was neck thru body. I do not know the serial #. However, it had custom inlays. It had a crescent, but not like a crescent moon, more like a cat's eye, with a dot instead of the star and then turning to dots at the 12th fret. It had the glow in the dark paint but it never really glowed. I sold the guitar in either late 1998 or early 1999 to a player in the Chicago area (where I was living) via Harmony central. I believe I paid $1,895 for the guitar brand new as a custom shop order. Things were more affordable back then.'
Many of them have lost their C.O.A. (Certificate Of Authenticity) and / or OHSC (Original Hard Shell Case) during years.
