Markings: There is no visible import mark. The right side of the receiver, left side of the butt and the bottom metal are each stamped with the serial number, “3625”. The barrel shank is marked “187” and with small inspection stamps that include a “star”, “T” and a “triangle”.

Barrel Length: Approximately 29 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted “V” post set atop a raised base and under a removable hood. The rear sight is a “V” notched blade attached to a sliding escalator that is marked from “1-20”.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The gloss finished stock has a pistol grip, nosecap, barrel band with sling bar, 2 through bolts, sling well, sling pass through and a domed washer. The buttplate is missing. The scallop for the bolt handle has been filled with epoxy. Other imperfections on the wood have been filled with epoxy. The finish shows scrapes & scuffs that have damaged the finish. The top of the grip and bolt handle scallop each show damage. The left side of the forearm shows filled surface repairs where the gloss finish has been scraped off. The LOP measures 13 1/8 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt. The stock rates in about Good to Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The grooves are grey. The rifling is deep. There is light erosion in the grooves and at the muzzle.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 70% of its metal finish as refinished. Sections of the metal show light surface erosion & a brown patina. The remaining sections show a freckling of light surface erosion. The screw heads show light use. The markings on top of the receiver have been lost. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions. The safety is stuck in the “fire” position”. We did not try to force it. Have a competent gunsmith remedy this issue prior to loading or firing. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Gewehr 98 was made by the Germans prior to the K98 becoming the standard German Military Rifle. Its finish needs some attention but the rifle’s bore can still put a ton of 8mm Mauser down range. This is a tough German Mauser that you don’t have to worry about abusing.

The Gewehr 98 action, using stripper clip loading with the powerful 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge, introduced advanced infantry weapon features…The Gewehr 98 replaced the earlier Gewehr 1888 rifle as the German service rifle, first saw combat in the Boxer Rebellion, and was the main German infantry rifle of World War I. The Gewehr 98 saw further military use by the Ottoman Empire and by Spanish Nationalists.”

To reduce the likelihood of damage during shipping, we may disassemble long guns by removing stocks when it is possible & easy and will not damage the wood or screws. We will also break down takedowns. We have had problems with rough carrier handling breaking the stocks at the wrist, and since we have begun to disassemble, we have not had any breakage. All parts will be individually wrapped. If you would prefer to not have your item disassembled, please let us know as soon as you win the bid.
Your item will be shipped within 1 week of receipt of good funds, usually the next day. You will receive an automatic notification with a tracking number upon shipment, to let you know that we have received funds. (Please obtain a tracking number from your carrier for immediate delivery confirmation of payment). If you are in Southern California, you are welcome to pick your item up and complete the transfer at our shop in Simi Valley (M-F, 8-4 and Saturday By Appointment).
This gun can only be shipped to an FFL or C&R, and it will be shipped from an FFL. It is your responsibility to ensure that the gun is legal to own and receive in your area. Please include a copy of your C&R or your dealer’s license with payment. These can also be faxed or emailed. We will need CFLC numbers for CA FFL’s to ship. We are FFL dealers and comply with all Federal, State and Local laws.
We always combine on shipping to save you as much as we can. You can generally assume it will be full shipping charge on the first item, 1/2 on the second, 1/3 on the third, etc. Exceptions only arise when the items are going to different locations (different licenses), or when they are exceptionally large, heavy or valuable and cannot be combined.
Payment:
Full payment on non-layaway items is required within 14 days. We accept Cashier's Checks, Money Orders, Cash, Personal Checks and Cards. Personal Checks are held a full week for clearance. All paper forms of payment already reflect a 3% cash discount. To pay online, please use the 'Pay Now' link at the bottom of the invoice, which will be sent after the sale. Layaways are offered on all items, requiring a 20% non refundable down payment within 7 days of the auction’s close and the balance within 60 days.
