We did not try to force it. Have a competent gunsmith remedy this issue prior to loading or firing. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements. Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None Our Assessment: This Gewehr 98 was made by the Germans prior to the K98 becoming the standard German Military Rifle. Its finish needs some attention but the rifle’s bore can still put a ton of 8mm Mauser down range. This is a tough German Mauser that you don’t have to worry about abusing. Some basics from Wikipedia: “The Gewehr 98 (abbreviated G98, Gew 98 or M98) is a German bolt action Mauser rifle firing cartridges from a 5 round internal clip-loaded magazine that was the German service rifle from 1898 to 1935, when it was replaced by the Karabiner 98k. The Gewehr 98 action, using stripper clip loading with the powerful 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge, introduced advanced infantry weapon features…The Gewehr 98 replaced the earlier Gewehr 1888 rifle as the German service rifle, first saw combat in the Boxer Rebellion, and was the main German infantry rifle of World War I. The Gewehr 98 saw further military use by the Ottoman Empire and by Spanish Nationalists.” CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This rifle is curio and relic eligible and can be transferred/sold in California.
